The analogous reaction of CO with the smaller tBuMe2SiLi yields only about 5-10 % of a ketyl radical and a complex mixture of products which was not analyzed.
The spin of 7Li is I=3/2, therefore the spectrum exhibits 7 lines (number of lines=2(2I) + 1).
Simulations were performed using the SimFonia software.

Since quenching of 1 + 3 to give a bis-silyl ketone requires oxidation we assume that oxygen dissolved in the water is the oxidizing agent. In addition, water can also play the role of an oxidizer.[14a]

In liquid solution fast rotation of the triplet species leads to averaging of dipole-dipole interactions resulting in signal broadening, see;

All calculation were done using Gaussian 09 Rev. D1 software;
The geometries of ketyl radicals 2, 3, and Ph2CO−. were optimized at the UB97D/6-31+G(d,p) level. The spin density was calculated using the NBO 6.0 version; Further computational details and a full reference list for the methods used are provided in the Supporting Information.

It is highly unlikely that the end carbon of 5 comes from CO as this will require also migration of the two silyl substituents.

Li+ coordination to the anionic model (4A, R3Si, R′3Si = Me3Si) lowers the energy of the rate determining step (TS4 m) by 20.5 kcal mol−1, to only 19.1 kcal mol−1. We suggest, that a similar effect is anticipated for the addition of Li+ to 9A and to TS4 (experimental system). For more details see Supporting Information.
