Systemic use of antibiotics in endodontics

Most endodontic infections are limited to the tooth and can be successfully treated by conventional root canal treatment without the need for local or systemic antibiotics. However, if there is evidence of systemic involvement and a rapid and diffuse spread of the infection, antibiotics may be indicated. Likewise, systemic prophylactic antibiotics may be indicated in risk patients with im­mune suppression. The current guidelines are summarized in this article. Die meisten endodontischen Infektionen können durch eine konventionelle Wurzelkanalbehandlung erfolgreich behandelt werden. Gibt es jedoch Hinweise auf eine systemische Beteiligung und eine schnelle Ausbreitung der Infektion, kann eine Antibiotikabehandlung angezeigt sein. Ferner kann eine systemische Antibiotikabehandlung zu Prophylaxezwecken bei Risikopatienten indiziert sein. Dieser Beitrag fasst die jeweiligen Indikationen zusammen.
