Résumé

Frustrated Lewis pairs consisting of diphenylphosphino and boryl groups located at the ortho-position can trap difluorocarbene affording stable zwitterionic adducts. The reaction can be reversed to release difluorocarbene at elevated temperatures.

ortho-(Dioxyboryl)phenylphosphines have found applications as ambiphilic systems with little “frustrated” character. Preparation of pinacol derivative 2 a and its analogue 2 b and their reactions with singlet oxygen were recently described, see:

Angew. Chem. 2010, 122, 6322-6325;
For preparation of 2 c and its use as a catalyst for hydrogenation of carbon dioxide, see: M.-A. Courtemanche, M.-A. Legare, L. Maron, F.-G. Fontaine, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 9326-9329;

Though interaction between B(OR)2 and PPh2 fragments is diminished due to decreased Lewis acidity of boron, the term “frustrated Lewis pair” was used for compounds 2 in the literature, see: T. Krachko, E. Nicolas, A. W. Ehlers, M. Nieger, J. C. Slootweg, Chem. Eur. J. 2018, 24, 12669-12677.
Fluorinated group Rf from borate salts RfB(OMe)3K can be transferred to C=O and C=N electrophiles under transition metal-free conditions, see: V. V. Levin, A. D. Dilman, P. A. Belyakov, M. I. Struchkova, V. A. Tartakovsky, Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 281-284.
