Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and their derivatives are important chemicals that can be used in lubricants, detergents, and cosmetics. MCFAs can be produced in several microbes, although production is not high. Dynamic regulation by synthetic biology is a good method of improving production of chemicals that avoids toxic intermediates, but chemical-responsive promoters are required.
