Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) promotes tumorigenesis by suppressing immune surveillance and inducing epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). TGFβ may augment tumorigenesis by activating autophagy, which protects cancer cells from chemotherapy and promotes invasive and anti-apoptotic properties.
