Lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) has been proposed to precede nanoparticle-induced macrophage injury and NLRP3 inflammasome activation; however, the underlying mechanism(s) of LMP is unknown. We propose that nanoparticle-induced lysosomal hyperpolarization triggers LMP.
