The [WF4(PH3)4]2+ cation is expected to be unstable towards spontaneous reduction of the tungsten(VI) centre as observed during the synthesis of [WF4{P(CH3)3}4][O3SCF3] from WF6 reported herein. The [WF4(PH3)4]n+ cations could also be susceptible to decomposition via elimination of HF.
