Originally identified as transporters for inorganic phosphate, solute carrier 17 (SLC17) family proteins subserve diverse physiological roles. The vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) package the principal excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate into synaptic vesicles (SVs).
