An almost planar geometry around the central Ge atom was also reported for the nonsolvated germyllithium (tBu2MeSi)3GeLi (Σ∡Ge=352.3°), see: M. Nakamoto, T. Fukawa, V. Y. Lee, A. Sekiguchi, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, 15160-15161.

All quantum mechanical calculations were performed using the ORCA 5.0.2 and Gaussian 09, Revision D.01 softwares (for list of authors see Supporting Information). Further computational details and a full reference list for the methods used are provided in the Supporting Information.

18 has a very low solubility in organic solvents such as hexane, benzene and THF, which prevents the acquisition of its UV/Vis spectrum. The calculated UV/Vis spectrum is provided in the Supporting Information.
Calculations using the CASSCF(2,2)/def2-TZVP level of theory for the model compound (Me3Si)6Ge8 find that the Highest Occupied Natural Orbital occupation number (NHONO) is 1.25 and the Lowest Unoccupied Natural Orbital occupation number (NLUNO) is 0.75, indicating significant biradical character.
The germanium element has only one NMR-active nucleus-73Ge (abundance 7.76 %), which has a spin of 9/2 and a relatively large quadrupole moment of −19.6 fm2. This results in broad lines in the NMR spectrum (if the germanium nucleus being observed is not disposed in a symmetric environment). Therefore 73Ge NMR spectra cannot be measured using regular techniques. For more details about 73Ge NMR spectroscopy see: C. S. Weinert, ISRN Spectroscopy 2012, 718050.
