[A sore tip of the tongue].

A 41-year-old patient presented with a sore tip of the tongue. The anterior side of the tongue had a red appearance showing a number of pronounced fungiform papillae and there were tooth impressions on the lateral sides of the tongue. This clinical picture is consistent with transient lingual papillitis. It has an unknown etiology. Local irritation might be a contributing factor. Transient lingual papillitis regresses spontaneously within a few weeks. Chronic lingual papulosis is a variant and shows enlarged filiform papillae; it can persist for years and is rarely painful. The cause of chronic lingual papulosis is similarly often unclear. Both conditions are very common, but often not recognized. Een 41-jarige patiënt presenteerde zich met een pijnlijke tongpunt. Het anterieure deel van de tongrug toonde een rood aspect met een aantal verheven fungiforme papillen en tandimpressies van de laterale tongranden. Het klinisch beeld past bij dat van een transient lingual papillitis. De oorzaak is onbekend. Mogelijk speelt lokale irritatie een rol. Transient lingual papillitis gaat na enkele weken spontaan in regressie. Een variant hiervan is de chronic lingual papulosis, een aandoening waarbij de filiforme papillen zijn vergroot, jarenlang kan bestaan en die bijna nooit klachten geeft. De oorzaak van chronic lingual papulosis is eveneens niet duidelijk. Beide aandoeningen worden vaak niet herkend, maar komen met enige regelmaat voor.
