Résumé

A chiral bispyrene macrocycle designed for exclusive intermolecular excimer fluorescence upon aggregation was synthesized by a double hydrothiolation of a bis-enol ether macrocycle followed by intramolecular oxidation of free thiols. Unusually high stereoselectivity was achieved for the thiol-ene additions under templated conditions and Et

The intramolecular S−S bond formation affords not only a favorable skeletal reorganization and rigidification of the chiral core but also the necessary intramolecular spatial separation of the two pyrene moieties.
Absolute configurations of (−)-(2R,3S,11R,12S)-1 and (+)-(2S,3R,11S,12R)-1 were determined in the course of the study.

In previous applications, functional tuning of the unsaturated macrocycles was realized by introducing various aliphatic or aromatic amide moieties instead modifying the macrocyclic platform. See: A. Homberg, J. Lacour, Chem. Sci. 2020, 11, 6362-6369.

Barium and calcium perchlorate salts were also used as templates. Stereoselectivity was excellent but removal of the divalent cations from the resulting crown-ethers 3 was essentially impossible due to the strong binding affinity of the cationic guests. See: M. Vishe, T. Lathion, S. Pascal, O. Yushchenko, A. Homberg, E. Brun, C. Piguet, E. Vauthey, J. Lacour, Helv. Chim. Acta 2018, 101, e1700265.
A relatively low yield is obtained at this step due probably to the oxidative sensitivity of the bis(thiol) adduct 3 b that can undergo oligomerization / polymerization readily.
Preliminary studies on the disulfide bond formation were performed with C2-cis bis(3,5-CF3 aniline) bis(thiol) adduct S1 (Figure S4.1). As expected, concentration plays a role and maximum intramolecular S−S bond formation occurs at 10−3 M.
The absolute configuration of (−)-2 a/(+)-2 a was only suggested in a previous study, see: A. Homberg, E. Brun, F. Zinna, S. Pascal, M. Górecki, L. Monnier, C. Besnard, G. Pescitelli, L. Di Bari, J. Lacour, Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 7043-7052. The current results confirm the initial prognostics.

Analogous time-evolution studies were carried out in either 60 % or 90 % water fractions. In these instances, a lack of or only minute changes could be observed in the time window of the experiment (Figures S8.3-S8.6).

Contrary to the ECD experiments, prolonged measurements over a time course of 8 hours did not demonstrate an evolution in CPL. See Figure S8.8.
