Disappointingly, solid-state 119Sn NMR measurements of distannene 6 were not successful and a 119Sn NMR signal was not observed (although 29Si and 13C NMR signals were observed - see Supporting Information). This is probably due to a sensitivity limiting factor for solid-state 119Sn NMR which is posed by the expected broad chemical shift anisotropy (CSA). The poor packing of the samples which limited spinning to 5 kHz may also contribute. Difficulties to observe 119Sn NMR signals of low-valent tin compounds were reported previously (see for example, B. E. Eichler, B. L. Phillips, P. P. Power, M. P. Augustine, Inorg. Chem. 2000, 39, 5450-5453).

All quantum mechanical calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09, Revision D.01 software (for list of authors see Supporting Information). All calculations were carried out at the B3PW91-D3/6-31+G(d,p)[H, C, Si], SDD [Sn] level of theory unless otherwise stated. Further computational details and a full reference list for the methods used are provided in the Supporting Information.
The calculated barrier for planarization of a model distannene (Me3Si)2Sn=Sn(SiMe3)2 (Σ∡Sn= 342.5°, θ=39.1°, τ=0.7°) is slightly higher (3.8 kcal/mol).

The structures of 2 and 6 were calculated using their X-ray coordinates with geometry optimization of only the hydrogen atoms.

ΔG of 36.9 kcal/mol at r.t. corresponds to Keq = 8.8×10−28. This very small equilibrium constant indicates that the concentration of stannylene 5 at r.t. is extremely low.
