The normal heart has remarkable metabolic flexibility that permits rapid switching between mitochondrial glucose oxidation and fatty acid (FA) oxidation to generate ATP. Loss of metabolic flexibility has been implicated in the genesis of contractile dysfunction seen in cardiomyopathy.
