The asymmetric Gram-negative outer membrane (OM) is the first line of defense for bacteria against environmental insults and attack by antimicrobials. The key component of the OM is lipopolysaccharide, which is transported to the surface by the essential lipopolysaccharide transport (Lpt) system.
