Hypercholesterolemia exacerbates autoimmune response and accelerates the progression of several autoimmune disorders, but the mechanistic basis is not well understood. We recently demonstrated that hypercholesterolemia is associated with increased serum extracellular DNA levels secondary to a defect in DNase-mediated clearance of DNA.
