Sunlight Exposure vs Oral Vitamin D Supplementation for Prevention of Vitamin D Deficiency in Infancy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

To compare the efficacy of sunlight exposure and oral vitamin D3 supplementation to achieve vitamin D sufficiency in infants at 6 months of age.... Open-label randomized controlled trial.... Public hospital in Northern India (28.7°N).... Breastfed infants at 6-8 weeks of age.... Randomized to receive sunlight exposure (40% body surface area for a minimum of 30 minutes/week) or oral vitamin D3 supplementation (400 IU/day) till 6 months of age.... Primary - proportion of infants having vitamin D sufficiency (>20 ng/mL). Secondary - proportion of infants developing vitamin D deficiency (<12ng/mL) and rickets in both the groups at 6 months of age... Eighty (40 in each group) infants with mean (SD) age 47.8 (4.5) days were enrolled. The proportion of infants with vitamin D sufficiency increased after intervention in the vitamin D group from 10.8% ... Oral vitamin D3 supplementation is more efficacious than sunlight in achieving vitamin D sufficiency in breastfed infants during the first 6 months of life due to better compliance....

Investigation of the Vitamin D Metabolite Ratio (VMR) as a Marker of Functional Vitamin D Deficiency: Findings from the SarcoPhAge Cohort.

The vitamin D metabolite ratio (VMR) has recently been identified as a potentially better indicator of vitamin D deficiency than 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) alone. This study aims to validate these ... The SarcoPhAge cohort is a Belgian cohort of community-dwelling older adults. Levels of 25(OH)D and 24,25(OH)... A total of 35 individuals (17.2%) had 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL, 40 individuals (19.6%) had 24,25(OH)... This study confirms that VMR is an efficient biomarker for assessing functional vitamin D deficiency....

Could the Majority of the Greek and Cypriot Population Be Vitamin D Deficient?

Hypovitaminosis D is prevalent in epidemic proportions in many developed countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of adequate 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels in two Medit... Data such as 25(OH)D, the month of blood sample collection, and demographic information were blindly collected from 8780 Greek and 2594 Cypriot individuals over 5 years. Comorbidities were also record... In the samples studied, 72.7% of the Greek and 69.3% of the Cypriot population sample had inadequate levels of 25(OH)D. The mean level for the Greek subjects was 25.1 ng/mL and for Cypriots 25.8 ng/mL... The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is paradoxically high in both Mediterranean countries....

Association of vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs7975232) with risk of preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia has a multifactorial-yet-elusive etiology. Recent reports suggest a link between preeclampsia and vitamin D (VD) metabolic axis. Genetic variations like single-nucleotide polymorphisms (S... The current study aimed to investigate the association of VDR gene polymorphism (ApaI) and VD deficiency with risk of developing preeclampsia.... In this case-control study, 40 preeclamptic and 40 normotensive pregnant women were compared for VD status and VDR gene polymorphism. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH) D] level was determined by enzym... Serum levels of 25(OH) D were very low but comparable in both preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women. The difference between the two groups were not statistically significant (... This study showed that VDR gene polymorphism (ApaI) and VD deficiency are not associated with the risk of preeclampsia....

Incidence of vitamin D deficiency in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a meta-analysis.

This study aimed to investigate the incidence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis through a meta-analysis and to analyze trends and risk factors.... Potentially relevant studies were searched using the terms "Vitamin D AND scoliosis." Data on the incidence and risk factors, such as race, curve magnitude, and sex, were extracted from the selected s... The incidence of vitamin D insufficiency in patients with idiopathic scoliosis was 36.19% (95% CI [21.93 to 50.46]. In contrast, the incidence of vitamin D deficiency was 41.43% (95% CI [16.62 66.23].... The incidence rates of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were 36.19% and 41.43%, respectively. The Caucasian race was associated with a lower risk...
