Résumé
Public health announcements, the White House, and other government and private agencies have made progress in reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorders, and more Americans are seeking treatment. Yet only a small percentage of persons seeking treatment are receiving care. Many resources are now available to help nurse practitioners use a harm reduction approach to helping people understand their options and make choices. Harm reduction includes offering U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for treatment of tobacco use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and opioid use disorder. Drug mechanisms for acute and maintenance treatment are discussed. [
